Big Sweep: Over 30 Years of Community Cleanups in Wake County

For over 30 years, Big Sweep has coordinated cleanups in Wake County, focusing on watersheds, streams, lakes, and wetlands that ultimately lead to the ocean. The staggering amount of shopping carts, tires, trash, and other debris polluting our waters inspired Alex Heinemann to join Big Sweep as their volunteer coordinator.

According to Alex, the biggest challenge is educating people about the importance of recycling and reusing what is being thrown away. Beyond participating in cleanup initiatives, volunteers are the voices of Big Sweep, spreading the message to the community about the significance of their work. These volunteers are crucial in communicating the importance of environmental conservation and the impact of waste on our water systems.

Logistics and permissions present another set of challenges. Some trash is difficult to pick up, and certain situations, such as fallen trees, require specialized crews to remove them. These obstacles can hinder the flow of water, affecting the movement of canoes and boats that help with trash collection.

During one of the events, Alex witnessed a volunteer who was unaware that the water he was drinking at home came from the very creek they were cleaning. This moment highlighted the direct impact of their efforts and underscored the interconnectedness of their work and everyday life.

Volunteers take immense pride and joy in participating in these cleanups because they are protecting their land, parks, greenways, and creeks. They know that their efforts today will benefit future generations and help protect our wonderful Earth.

Alex encourages everyone to network, communicate, and ask questions to close gaps in knowledge and find more effective ways to help make a better world. Your involvement can make a significant difference in maintaining the beauty and health of our natural environments.

Join Big Sweep in their mission to protect our waters and ensure a cleaner, healthier future for all.
